Arctostaphylos glauca, commonly known as Big Berry Manzanita, is an evergreen shrub native to the chaparral and coastal sage scrub habitats of California and Baja California. Belonging to the Ericaceae family, it is characterized by its dense, branching growth habit and smooth, reddish-brown bark. The plant typically reaches heights of 6 to 12 feet and features oval-shaped leaves with a distinctive blue-gray hue, giving it its species epithet "glauca." Big Berry Manzanita produces small, urn-shaped flowers that range in color from white to pale pink, followed by edible berries that are a food source for birds and mammals.Big Berry Manzanita is adapted to the dry, nutrient-poor soils and periodic wildfires that characterize its native chaparral habitats.
