A tender herbaceous perennial in the mint family (Lamiaceae), Salvia farinacea is native to the south-central United States and northeast Mexico. It thrives in prairies, plains, meadows, pastures, and woodland edges. This plant forms thick, rounded clumps and grows 2 to 3 feet tall and 1 to 2 feet wide.
